Ban Ean
Completed (January 2015)

Background...

Ban Ean is located to the south of Luang Prabang, approximately 16km down the main road (route 13). The village sits on the bank of the Nam Khan River, and is close to the Tad Sae Waterfalls, one of the tourist attractions around Luang Prabang. Though it has a fairly close proximity to the well-known falls, it still remains a remote and impoverished community. Upon leaving the main road, transport moves slowly down a dirt road extending around 1km to the community. On either side of the dirt road there are a combination of rice fields, patches of jungle and pineapple farms.

The village is home to 102 families with a total population of 518. There is a small primary school within the community. Employment varies quite a bit, when compared to most communities, from fishing in the Nam Khan, cultivating pineapple farms, raising livestock and working the rice fields. A lot of the villagers regularly travel to Luang Prabang to sell their goods at the markets.

The Project:
Providing assistance to the community in renovating the current water system, and constructing a new two-unit communal sanitation facility.

The project will consist largely around the expansion of the current water holding tank. This will involve digging, mixing and laying cement, as well as replacing several sections of pipe a long the line into the village. There will also be a new trench dug, to provide an extra pipeline to the community. Meanwhile, volunteers will also be assisting locals on the construction of a two-unit sanitation facility to be situated by the village hall. This will be our first venture into development work in Ban Ean, and the feedback from the local community has been very positive. We believe the increased
supply of water will be highly valuable here.  Although situated on the Nam Khan, the river water is not safe enough to drink, and we hope the health of the community will improve with the additional access to clean and safe water. In turn, the sanitation facility will be an extra addition in improving hygiene and general health. We have been able to initiate two types of development thanks to the support of the community. Through the provision materials, but largely labour, we are able to justify implementing these two phases at once.
