Background...
Travel 30km to the north of Luang Prabang and one will discover the village of Ban Kok. Set beside cascading limestone cliffs and jungle the village is a remote community. The village is situated on the Mekong/Nam Ou confluence and is only accessible via boat or trek! Viewpoints from the village offer panoramic Mekong views of the river and limestone cliffs. With a lack of road access the need for basic development here is great. The village consists of a population of 243, which is broken down across 43 families. The school capacity is only fit for 20 students therefore the school environment needs to renovated and expanded to be more accessible to the youngsters in the village.

The Project:
To renovate the village primary school, replace the roofing and continue construction of a pre-school building.
To renovate the village primary school, replace the roofing and continue construction of a pre-school building.
The school building in Ban Kok is split in to only two classrooms. There is also an open air pre-school building that currently has a capacity for only twenty students. The main primary school building is in a poor condition, susceptible to leaks and certainly in need of more than a lick of paint. With only two classrooms class age ranges are broad, diluting the quality of education delivered. Therefore, Volun-Tour Laos sees an opportunity to renovate and assist in construction of the school with a view to improving the learning environment.

Upon completion of the renovation and construction, we will look to implement further project phases in the community. This may include development of the village's water system, as well as potential work on further extension of the school building. We believe this project is integral to the improvement of the learning environment within the community. Moreover, the standard of education delivered will improve, in turn access to the school will be enhanced.
