Location and Access

Access to the community is relatively straightforward. The distance from Luang Prabang city is around 20km northbound on route 13 and the community is accessible by a decent dirt track that meanders off the main road.  The village is on the bank of the Nam Ou River, and the local school sits atop a hill providing panoramic views of rolling mountains towards the Mekong River and a view overlooking the community below. Access should be straightforward all-year round making supply runs in wet season achievable.

The Economy

The economy is predominantly farming and fishing. With such close proximity to the Nam Ou River fishing to sell locally or at the market is a main source of income. The surrounding mountains and valley’s provide grounds for agriculture. Valleys of paddy fields juxtaposed by hills steeped in teak trees. Slash and burn is evident and indeed prevalent during the month of March.
Demographic

The village is home to 128 families with a total population of 625. Two ethnicities reside in the community, Khmu and Lao Lum. There are a variety of houses ranging from semi-concrete and wooden structures through to wooden shacks.

The Project:
To assist the local community with the renovation of the local school building and provide support for the process of replacing the roof.

The current school building is in a state of disrepair. Roof replacement is needed, as well as comprehensive painting and replacement of several doors and windows over the 6 classrooms. There are total of 82 students with 31 girls and the rest boys. The teaching staff is comprised of 6 teachers and the education is spread across 6 age groups ranging from kindergarten through to grade 5. Ages of the students range from 3 through to 12.  The teachers currently struggle with a lack of resources, as well as a poor learning environment. The renovation should drastically improve the facility and enhance the education delivered by teachers and received by the students.
What we hope to achieve is to provide a much enhanced learning environment for both students and teachers to learn and teach in. With new tables and equipment, the quality of teaching and student’s attainment should improve. Increased comfort during both the hot, dry and rainy seasons. Properly hung doors and windows will provide warmth during the cool winter mornings. Fans will improve comfort during the humidity of rainy season. Long-term improvement to the structure with a new and properly fitted roof.

We will base this project on one we have already completed. Na Sai.

The current school...

How we expect the school to look after completion.

The renovated school in Ban Na Sai

The project has commenced as of 19th May 2015.

Work will begin on the roof, due to wet season looming on the horizon it is imperative to get this replaced first. Suffice to say that the current condition of the roof is susceptible to leaks. Indeed, contractors will be checking the integrity of the roofing beams that may have become degraded by water damage.

In total 100 roofing panels were delivered to the community and the locals were ready and waiting to receive them. With guidance from skilled contractors the villagers will now begin replacing the roof in time for our World Challenge volunteers.

The comprehensive renovation of Had Nya Primary School is well underway, with the locals having already replaced much of the old roof. This is the first stage, our volunteers will come in June and July to work on the rest of the renovation. The work will include cleaning and painting the walls, fixing, sanding and painting desks and chairs as well as assisting the villagers replace worn out doors and window frames.
With wet season nearly upon us the new roof will be vital in preventing further deterioration of the school, whilst also keeping our volunteers sheltered and allowing the rest of the renovation to continue without the threat of water damage.

In September 2015, the school renovation was completed. In time for the start of the new school year, the students and teachers are now enjoying studying and working in a much improved learning environment.
