Houy Pong
(completed: February 2014)

Centre of the village (September 2013).
Background...

Travel 18km to the north of Luang Prabang and you will find the village of Houy Pong. The village is surrounded by jungle and a stream encircles the community, making access difficult during the monsoon rains. It is the remoteness of the community that makes it one of the least underdeveloped in Champhit District and the need for basic infrastructural development is great. Access is in the form of a dirt road, or mud road in wet season, with the community at the end of the track.

The Project:
To supply the village with a potable water system (phase 1) followed by the construction of sanitation facilities for all village households (phase 2).

This was our outline for the project.

Phase one in Houy Pong (2012), to build a potable water system for the community which would see the installation of 11 taps through out the community. The village is a relatively isolated community and had no access to water taps. The outcome sees the entire population with access to sufficient and safe water.
Phase two in Houy Pong (2013/2014), to construct sanitation systems for all households within the community. The view being to improve health and wellbeing of all families in the village. The further work also benefited the community in the form of workshops. Several meetings and gatherings to discuss  with locals the benefits of maintaining sanitation facilities and the importance of hygiene.
