Background...
Approximately 50km to the south of Pakse is the village of Kiet Ngong. Accessible only by a very bumpy dirt road the remoteness of the village becomes evident. Nestled amongst a backdrop of mountains and rich green jungle, the village has a very relaxed and tranquil vibe. Located in the district of Pathoumphone the village has a population of just over 500 spread across 65 families. The main source of income in the village is unsurprisingly farming, howeve, the location of the village, on the border of the Xe Pian wetlands, makes it an outpost for trekking and elephant riding. Moreover, several very interesting locals are in the business of raising catfish!

Phase One: Volun-Tour Laos are very pleased to announce that phase one our southern project out of Pakse, in the village of Kiet Ngong, has been completed. World Challenge Asia Pacific students from Kilbreda College, Aberfoyle Park and Border Town High worked on the construction of a sanitation facility for the village. On behalf of the villagers and the entire VTL team we wish to thank these schools for their brilliant efforts and contributions to the project! VTL will be revisiting the village summer 2014 where student teams from Balwyn High and Ashby School will be working on a project with the local primary school.

Phase Two: Situated in the centre of the village the primary school in Kiet Ngong is a hub for education for several small communities in the surrounding area as well as the village itself. With a student population of 116 there are plenty of young people who will benefit from a much improved educational facility and learning environment. The current primary

school building is a very basic facility, consisting of three classrooms- a wooden structure without doors or windows and without a concrete floor! The wet season months can turn the inside of the building into swamp like conditions. Therefore, through the construction of the floor, plus general improvements to the structure and adding doors and windows,

Volun-Tour Laos sees an opportunity to vastly improve the conditions for the pupils attending. We believe the project is justifiable as these improvements will also encourage better attendance, the quality of education provided, increase the morale of students and staff and make for a far greater learning environment.
