Na Kam
completed (September 2014)

Handover of the school building
The new building now provides a much enhanced learning environment for the young children in Na Kam.
Background...

Across the Mekong and 14km to the north of Luang Prabang sits the village of Ban Na Kam, set amongst rice paddy fields and dense jungle. As one of the developing communities in Champhit District the need for basic infrastructural development is great. With only a mud road running to the village the remoteness is evident from the outset and accessibility is an issue in wet season. As one of the larger villages we work with, the village is home to 194 families with a total population of just over a thousand. The major source of employment for the villagers is farming, with many commuting to Luang Prabang for the morning market. The school population is 210 and the student population are spread over 5 classrooms. Volun-Tour Laos is returning to this site to further improve the education facility.

The Project:
To assist in the extension of the local primary school with the construction of a pre-school building.

The school building at Ban Na Kam is split in to five classrooms. However, the education provided is given to four different age groups. The village chief states that this situation makes it a difficult atmosphere for students and teachers to both learn and teach. Thus, Volun-Tour Laos sees an opportunity to renovate the school and improve the
educational environment. By constructing a pre-school building, it will allow greater specification in the main primary school building, as well as greatly improving the level of teaching given to younger children. Moreover, more classroom space will increase the capacity of the school, allowing an increased amount of young villagers to gain an
education. Furthermore, smaller surrounding communities will be able to send their children to gain an education at Ban Na Kam. Therefore we justify the project due to the improvements in teaching standards, the improvements in the learning environment and increased access for young villagers to gain an education.

The villagers are always grateful for the support given by our volunteers.
